I do love character development to set up the pay off in the later half of the film. Out of all my friends and family I have the greatest patience for it. That being said, the first hour is too mundane and drawn out for that development. I get the angst and tension between the Mother and son. The fixer Father, the son sleepwalking through his days feeling guilt and pushing his friends away. But an entire hour of this is painfully unnecessary, could have been accomplished in 30 minutes. It was indulgent and perhaps condescending of Robert Redford to feel his audience needed that much time to grasp the dynamics or at least he could have shot shorter relevant scenes instead long drawn out scenes with unnecessary time left in. Perhaps editing is to blame. The first half of Ordinary People is the most drab movie I have sat through, unmatched only by “The Hours. I do agree it’s acting is superb by a well casted group of the main characters. I also agree that it was a much needed subject matter presented in a raw fashion, but I really had to fight fast forwarding through it. Example: The swimming, the swim coach scenes, total unnecessary how much it went on and on before he finally quit, but truly, my opinion is the great majority of scenes should have been more precise and poignant.
