Ok, I’m spending my time on this review, so I suggest you read it if you want the real insider.
This book does deserve the hype. For your convenience, I’ll make a list:
1. It feels like there is no wall between the reader and the characters. I feel for the MCs. I care. Everything they do well explained. This feels like a recitation from a diary and not a book, which is not the purpose.
2. Neal Shusterman is the master of telling and showing. He uses “the character CLEARLY felt this” and “that CLEARLY means that,” wonderfully conveying his meaning to the reader
3. the author uses words that just fit. he is uses these linguistics cleverly and in well-placed manner.
4. I feel, as the reader, every page was leaving me anticipating the next. I understand the purpose of the plot, and the better it became, the more interested I was.
5. Many people talk about how cool the dystopian “post-mortal” world is, and it feels very developed. Sometimes the author will input snippets of information as to “clear up” doubts, doing it in all the right places.
There is one big pro: the interjections of journal pages was clever. This is, fortunately, one of the many good things in the book.
All is to say, this book deserves the hype. I gave it a five-star rating because it exceeds its YA reward and end-of-book discussion questions.
