A page turner. It mixes very well the lives of the rich and the burdens of the poor in the years before WW 1. The rich have no feelings for the poor except to make sure they remain poor. The poor have no stability, no chance to rise above living day-to-day, not knowing where they will be the next day, hoping for at least a meal or two and a place to sleep safely.
