I watched a recent episode of Shark Tank in which none of the Sharks was willing to invest in a person's $129 razor for various reasons. I was most surprised by the failure of ANY of the sharks to ask what privilege or protection the Razor Provider had in the replacement blades. It is commonly known that most of the profits in this industry are not made by selling razors, but by selling razor blades. If a provider legally protects itself from competition that may "knock off" its blades, then the profitability of that provider is maximized. For none of the Sharks to even ask the status of this part of the marketing plan really surprised me. I perceived that they may not be as smart as they think that they are. They may have simply "missed" this important concept in formulating a reason for their rejection.
