I read all the Witcher books (did not play the games) and for good or bad I knew my experience in watching the show would be affected to a degree. And, also to a degree, HBO’s Game of Thrones was set as a benchmark. I also read all the Game of Thrones books and enjoyed the HBO series very much. But I didn’t expect to be as disappointed in Netflix’s The Witcher as much as I was. In NO way can Netflix’s The Witcher be compared to HBO’s Game of Thrones. It’s just not in the same league as GOT, not even close. Nor can it be compared to the book series in terms of how good the real Witcher story is. Netflix has always said that the show is “loosely based on the books and video games” and that’s fine but their version just isn’t good. Basically, Lauren Hissrich and other creators of the show took a brilliant fantasy story and downgraded it’s creativeness. In general the writing and dialogue was terrible. The plot line moves way too fast. The casting is very hit or miss, although I like Henry Cavill as Gerald and Anya Chalotra as Yennefer and Joey Batey as Dandelion. I guess in terms of action and sexiness it can certainly entertain some people. I believe that if Netflix stuck with the first book “The Last Wish” as it is written, at least for the first season, then they would have a much better show.
