[contains spoiler] The entire premise of this book seems to be an opportunity to hoist the anti-choice flag. A major thread of this book is the rape of a young girl, the brother of the accused, and a resulting pregnancy. Grisham's treatment of her situation is disgraceful and insensitive. He is concerned that if she has an abortion before trial they'll lose valuable evidence about paternity, elevating legal strategy above forcing a child to endure an unwanted pregnancy produced by rape. Jake is adamant he won't lend her money for the procedure to terminate the pregnancy. A preacher's wife waxes on about the sinfulness of abortion and how important it is to prioritize making a young, childless couple seeking adoption happy over selfish decisions about ending a pregnancy. More repulsive, Jake and his wife end up adopting the baby, bringing joy into his family's life. No qualms about effectively coercing a minor into having a baby for his own selfish purposes. Disgusting! Last Grisham book I'll read! (Oh. And the legal case is unresolved in the end. Suggesting the anti-abortion line was more important than his client).
