An extraordinary book. I wasn’t sure I wanted to begin such a long work, but after reading just a few pages, I couldn’t stop. The scenes of Indian life, the reality of caste, the misery of corruption— all are described in vivid an excruciating detail. The characters are alive and real as they cycle through the turmoil of their time. And yet, as the title implies, there is more in this life than misery and despair. Superb book!
