Trying by Kobi Yamada is an inspirational read. The story begins with a little boy admiring an old man’s sculptures; however, the boy doubts he can make beautiful art like the man. The old man provided the boy with a one word response, “Try.” As the boy tries to make sculptures, he struggles and wants to give up, but the old man is there to encourage him.
With every attempt at making art, the boy becomes better and better; he slowly builds the confidence in his ability to create lovely art. The book ends with the boy becoming a sculptor who is prepared to make beautiful art and mentor the next generation.
The amazing illustrations by Elise Hurst displays the beauty of intergenerational dialogue and its inspirational impact on young people.
