(Edit: I am changing review from 2 stars down to just 1 star.)
1. The game is extremely shallow. Not only as a MMO, but specifically as a RPG.
2. The game has the name Final Fantasy in the title. Final Fantasy once stood for quality, it now stands for terrible.
That is the short version. The long version is as follows:
I have been playing Final Fantasy games for over 20 years. Despite my loyalty and love for the traditional RPG series, I can no longer say I support Final Fantasy. The series has become simple, cheap, and shallow.
Battle Systems:
The battle systems are extremely extremely simplistic. As of the writing of this review, the entire scope of FFXIV's combat is:
-Player location. ("Positionals" and "mechanics execution")
-Rotation.
-Item level/Gear.
What is especially bad about this, is 90% of the time your location is insignificant, rotations are constantly being reduced and simplified. Example: In Endwalker, the job GNB is having their Gnashing Fang combo combined into a single button, whereas PvP has seen this across all jobs. A button in the menu, automatically equips your highest item level gear, based on your current class. Even in savage raids, if you're not a melee your position only matters 50% of the time, at best.
If this isn't the most absurd level of handholding I don't know what is.
Music:
The music is done with low quality sounds, the sound director even admitted to using a noodle cup as an instrument. Additionally it randomly starts and stops for no logical reason.
Graphics/Quality/Aesthetics:
A large portion of XIV's success stems from Aesthetics. I personally prefer the limited character creation system, due to most players failing to create unique, and sensible characters when given too many options, a limited system effectively "saves" players from theirself, resulting in a more immersive and quality experience. The problem with XIV is the gear creation by the development team is wildly inconsistent. Examples: The "Late Allagan" set is of high quailty, but the design was actually done by a player. The items "Craftsman Singlet" and "Casual Jacket" appear of very low quality, pixel and draw line count.
Questing:
This is the aspect many players praise FFXIV for, yet if you research the A Realm Reborn quest line, many say its actually terrible. So the very thing the players praise, they themselves say is dreadful. Note: ARR is 40+ hours long. With this to the side, the questing is 100% exactly the same from the first quest to the current highest level quest. You just go from place to place talking to people or doing an instance. There is no variety at all, ever.
Character Customization: (stats/skills)
There literally is none, as of the writing of this review. Materia only pertains to at maximum a 1-5% damage increase. Nothing else. Remember, this, according to the director himself, is supposed to be a Final Fantasy first, and a MMO second. Yet Final Fantasy is a RPG, and this game has zero customization.
Mini games:
Even with FFXIV's large list of mini-games such as crafting, chocobo racing, and other features, they cannot make up for the horrible questing design, bland gameplay, and simplistic nature of the game. I can barely even consider FFXIV much of a video game anymore, let alone a RPG.
This game deserves 0 stars honestly.
