When the film Ningen no Joken appeared in 1959, it was a grim reminder of the horrors of war for all those who had participated in or suffered from WW ll. Today it is still relevant as the war grinds on in the Ukraine with all its suffering. I was privileged to appear more than sixty years ago in A Soldier's Prayer as Chabaefu, Kaji's only Russian friend. I served some time in the British Army, mainly in Cyprus, so theme of war was no stranger to me. This long movie will stand the test of time and will be just as relevant a thousand years from now. It's an emotional, thought-provoking film displaying superb acting, directing, realistic sets and authentic atmosphere. This film shows, without doubt, as the Japanese title of the film translates, a Human Condition.
