If this had been my only introduction to Jane Austen I would never have read any of her novels or watched any movie based on them. And if I had not been already familiar with the novel Emma I couldn’t have followed the plot of this adaptation. None of the characters in the movie possessed any warmth at all. Each one introduced was more shallow and unkind than the one before. The only redeeming quality of this movie was the beauty of the sets and countryside.
