It’s really frustrating, I can’t stand seeing this movie. Many teens from my school are very school and strive to be tall, so you can say I have a bias but I’m sharing my honest opinion: It’s not even the message they were trying to convey, it was how they conveyed it. It was very stereotypical for a movie that was trying to fight stereotypes. And although I can see why a girl who is 6’5 and not generally attractive would feel bad about herself, I fail to see how a pretty, y’all, blonde model comes to hate herself in a movie like this. If Netflix was trying to fight back stereotypes, they should have done it properly, like “the hate u give”. It showed how both sides had their own faults and the no matter the hardship, we should look past a person’s barrier and see their beautiful true self. In this movie, they made the mistake of making Jodi’s only personality being tall. She thinks her life is the worst when she’s surrounded by a family who loves her, a lot of money and from what I see, a pretty good educational stance. But she fails to appreciate what she has and thinks that her life is the worst, the movie should’ve looked into everyone else’s lives too. The only character that was likable in my view was Jodi’s short friend, although not many people are actually like that!(NON-RELISTIC!!) That’s another thing, the movie was very unrealistic. It’s good to make a movie realistic if you want it to be relatable, but this movie screwed up horribly on that. A movie like this should have: a realistic storyline, relatable/likable characters, and the urge to show that there are other troubles and stereotypes that other people face! Even though I’m quite short, I would’ve enjoyed a movie about a tall girl if they made it so that it could be liked by people who aren’t tall as well! It forms us as the bad guys, when only bullies are. Whenever I try to discuss the movie with my tall friend (who is only 5’6) she shuts down my claims and labels me wrong, saying y’all people are the most discriminated against and many people have asked her, “How’s the weather up there?” For one, I’ve never heard anyone say that, only that the wish they were as tall as her. Two, many people would love to be tall! So many people get killed for no reason besides the fact that they’re colored or LGBTQ+, but tall? You certainly won’t be killed for being tall! As a bi-racial person, some of you might think I’m being biased, but in all honestly, we should definitely tackle the problem about girls being insecure about their height, but it’s certainly not the worst punishment ever to be tall! I wish this movie just tried to reach deeper in and show that it isn’t something you have to deal with, it’s a treasure to be tall. But this was not the tall girl movie that the teens of America needed right now, and for that reason, I hate this movie.
