Loved the first series in it's day, and was sad to see it go. It was my sisters favorite show at the time. It's end was also the end of an era, along with Dawson's Creek, Buffy, and so many other great shows.
This version has some good and bad going for it. I see a lot of angry users on here complaining about the bad, and I have to agree 😏. Whether you agree or don't, political opinion should not be injected into a non-political TV show. I'm intelligent enough to know when someone is attempting to indoctrinate me, so writers, please stop. Thanks!
I too am irritated that Michael (a character who was always heterosexual) is now suddenly gay or bi-sexual, because they had a spot to fill for their PC quota. I think introducing a new LGBT character in a way that feels authentic and adds something to the story or propels a story arc forward is awesome and makes sense, however this does not, and feels very fake and forced so that no one feels left out.
I can see the good though. Liz and Max have obvious chemistry. Nathan Parsons
in particular is perfect for this role, and given time I think will really bring something special to the character. Jeanine Mason as Liz is interesting, and we'll see. I think one of my favorite things about Liz from the first series, was that Shiri Appleby played her as very quiet, introverted and loving. The new series has created a very verbal and aggressive Liz, but I'm open to seeing where that goes, as Parsons portrayal seems to play off her demeanor well. Michael Vlamis has potential in the role of Michael, and I look forward to seeing more from him. Lily Cowles is not Isabelle. I'm not sure who was in charge of casting, how this could have happened, and how at this point this could be fixed, but someone really dropped the ball on that one. Isabelle, is strong yet soft, vibrant, elegant, and mature but somehow youthful at the same time. There's a self controled and self contained way about her, yet she has a vulnerability that is still visible. Obviously, there are not a lot of Katherine Heigle's out there, so I get it, but I think they could have done better than this. Michael Trevino as Kyle... Excellent! The rest of the cast is literally forgettable. Maybe time will change that, but I just don't know.
In terms of the storyline, kudos to the writers for setting the stage after the college years. Exciting things can actually ocurr after the age of 18, and I'm thrilled that the CW might actually understand that there are people over 30 who enjoy the sci-fi, fantasy and fiction genre. There is nothing wrong with teen drama, but we have lots of it already. Of all the writing in this first episode, I'm most intrigued by the psychic link of the hand print and the effects, and the big secret about Rosa, that Max is fighting to keep. I will keep watching to find out more.
In closing, I think I would give the show 3 and a half/5 for it's pilot. Beautiful visuals, the potential for some great story lines, romantic chemistry, and some well made casting choices are all in it's favor. Please ditch the immigration propaganda, and the PC protocol.
