If you don’t like this film, I can’t see how you would be able to appreciate a film like Mulholland Drive or Sunset Blvd. Not to say that Under the silver lake is a better film...it’s not. However what the film manages to do is focus on present day Hollywood much like those films did, that is more in touch with our generation and culture of today, while maintaining a nostalgic style of classical Hollywood which only adds to the films themes. The film both criticizes Hollywood and the entertainment industry in general while also critiquing are current culture of pessimism. Andrew Garfield’s character is a representation of a loss generation driven by things that ultimately don’t matter. By the end of the film he is still left with all his personal problems while focusing on completely irrelevant ones. He is left with more questions than answers, and so is the audience, who themselves will ask “what was the point?”. Garfield’s character is caught up in the Hollywood scene that is driven by illusions and vices that leaves to an empty and meaningless life. It’s a truly incredible film that is ahead of its time, and perhaps pissed off critics and movie studios considering that a film starring an acclaimed and known Starr like Andrew Garfield fresh off hacksaw ridge and silence, to last 3 days in theatres before being on VOD. This is a film that I hope will genuinely grow a cult status, because regardless of its critical and box office let downs, there is still so much to appreciate and enjoy.
