So I saw Thor Love & Thunder today and it was Alright. Taika tries to recapture the joy, craft and fun of Thor Ragnarok but ultimately it’s a way lesser movie compared to that one. The movie tries to have heart and it certainly does, but some elements are more effective than the others. The CGI is pretty bad in some sequences, which Is disappointing because this is the same studio that had one of the best CGI characters ever to exist on screen (Thanos) But I’ve been noticing a laughably bad amount of poorly used green screen in a lot of Phase 4 projects. It’s still a serviceable movie, but all together its just passable and kinda forgettable… Natalie Portman & Christian bale are the standouts though, both do really good work here. Russell Crowe isn’t in the movie a lot, but he has a lot of fun and is entertaining to watch. Plus he had a cool accent and was humorous. The movie had some cool cameos that fans would notice, and I was grateful for those and they were nice. But the film tries to be a rom-com and regarding that, it feels a little half baked but overall it can be sweet/cute. Like the movie is very inconsistent tonally and with its vibes. Christian bale’s character is very dark and gloomy. And so are his scenes and those Don’t match the rest of the movie that wants to be a fun space adventure at one hand, a comedy, a rom com and an action movie! Also most of the action is like predictable MCU fight scenes. Quick cuts, choppy editing where you don’t actually see the fighting happening! There’s a lot of jokes, but Thor Ragnarok was way funnier! Honestly comedy wise, the goats were the most funny aspect to me. Overall, I wish Thor love and Thunder was way better than it was. It had much more potential, it was my my most anticipated MCU movie from 2022! But the final result is a decent, fun and disappointing film in some areas. I want also mention the ending of the movie, because I like the direction If went. Also both post credit scenes are really good and leaves you excited for the future!

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

So I watched Doctor strange into the Multiverse of Madness yesterday, here are my thoughts without any spoilers. This film definitely feels like a Sam Raimi movie. Especially with the horror elements implemented throughout, but even without the horror aspects it also feels like a comic book film/Sam Raimi movie. Especially with the techniques that he uses. The movie is really impressive though, because it balances a lot, like being a Sam Raimi horror/comic book movie, it has to balance being a Doctor strange/multiverse movie and on top of that it juggles being a MCU movie as well with all these respected characters! And it has to do all of this and more in only 2 hours basically. And the runtime is one of the faults of this movie. The pacing isn’t the best and I wish we got way more breathing room. But not only is the pacing the only issue here, there are some moments that are kinda shocking and I am sure will displease fans. Also I know where Wanda is coming from in this movie, I understand all the pain and hardships she had to endure, but at her core she’s supposed to be a “superhero” but there’s no glimpses of that in this film for the most part and she was just annoying. But besides all the shortcomings this movie has, it also has so much beaming qualities! It feels so creatively freeing from a filmmaking perspective, it is the best shot MCU movie! It just looks so beautiful, the score from Danny Elfman is elegant and elevates the movie even more! Not to mention the movie is just so unique and cool at times. So all together Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness is amazing and Sam Raimi has printed his distinctive stamp on the Marvel cinematic universe!

I haven’t written a full in-depth review for a movie in a long time but Soul left me with a lot to say. Let me just get something out of the way first. I was really excited for this movie and went in with high expectations! I love Pixar pretty much all their movies other than a few. I also generally like animation movies because I mostly grew up with them and it’s been cool over the years seeing animation for these movies get better and better! I’m also a big fan of this movie’s director Pete Doctor! The man knows how to make beautiful and compelling movies and stories that are often really emotional! From Up to Inside Out and Monsters Inc. He knows the work and you could argue he perfected it. So I went in into this movie with a lot of high expectations, one of them being that I predicted that Soul may be my favourite movie from the entire year! Cause when I heard about the premise of the movie I was super intrigued and I felt like I resonated with it. I’m happy to say that this is a movie a lot of people will resonate with and connect with and even I resonated with it at some of its messages. Soul for me felt like one of Pixar’s most ambitious films yet. It’s wildly different then what you would expect from a family animated movie. I would argue that this movie is aimed at adults or students who are looking for explanations or purposes In their life. That’s how mature it is, and I think if young kids would watch this movie they wouldn’t like it and it would be far from them being able to understand this story and the messages it presents. This movie is really complex, deep, intimate, personal and unfortunately too complicated for its own good. I personally might have a disadvantage with understanding the story of this movie because I find myself often getting confused and not understanding what the filmmakers and writers of movies want to convey to me. So that might be an issue with me and not the movie’s but, I was pretty confused with the story and everything that is presented. Nonetheless, let me go back on how bold this movie is though because I honestly wasn’t expecting this from Pixar. This movie has a lot of layers it explores, it’s fast-paced at just ninety minutes and wildly different from anything else in its field. So it’s important to give credit where credits due. I didn’t even get started on how breathtaking and incredible the animation for this movie is. I could say so much more on the level of detail Pixar and their entire team put into with there animation for this movie. The movie was also unexpected at times when it gave me vibes from the movie Freaky Friday and how the events from this movie were similar to that movie at parts. It also had great music that it presented, astonishing world-building and well-realized characters that you end up caring for. Overall Soul was one of the most unique movies Pixar has to offer. With a dense and compacted plot and messages that will leave audiences pondering long after its over, humour that works for most of the time, clever dialogue, characters with a lot of personalities and just gorgeous animation makes Soul one of the best movies of the year. Unfortunately for me though I felt like I couldn’t appreciate and grasp all the messages, morals and the overall story that the movie had to offer. That’s alright though because I still had an amazing time with Soul!

On the rocks is the newest A24 movie directed by Sofia Coppola and I got to watch it yesterday. I’ve been wanting to watch this movie ever since I first heard of it. I mean how could you not be at least interested when there are so many ingredients for perfection involved! A new A24 movie, the magnificent director Sofia Coppola, the one and only Bill Murray and the very talented Rashida Jones. That alone made me so on board and I had to watch it as soon as I had a chance. I want to say that Sofia Coppola is a very skilled, focused and important director right now and she was always to begin with. There’s a mood she creates in some of her best movies and that mood feels so calm, relaxed, sometimes melancholy but in a good sense and puts you in a feeling where you can just sit back and enjoy what you’re about to watch. That’s why I have a lot of respect for her as a director, artist and am always intrigued with what she’s up to. So about On the rocks, it was what I expected it to be and what I wanted it to be. I didn't know how much I needed to watch a movie like On the rocks right now in my life. Something that was so lighthearted, delightful, fun and just on-point performances from Rashida Jones and Bill Murray. I have to admit during the early scenes with both of them I wasn’t really feeling there chemistry and didn’t know if it would really work in the movie. Once I finished watching it I was proved wrong because the chemistry between Rashida Jones and Bill Murray really worked and was just a lot of fun to witness. I want to point out that Bill Murray’s performance here didn’t even feel like a role, character or work that he had to do. Cause he was just having so much fun and is such a professional and it showed. The only thing I wish that the movie could have done better was with the character Jenny Slate played. I’m a fan of her and admire her as an actress but it felt like the character she played in the movie was wasted, a gimmick and I wish they utilized her better. Other than that On the rocks proves that Sofia Coppola is a director that knows how to make movies that anyone can appreciate, with gorgeous cinematography throughout, performances that really work, a fun story that you can sit back and watch unfold and a perfect runtime all makes On the rocks another hit for A24 and Sofia Coppola!

I’m thinking of ending things is the newest Netflix film directed by Charlie Kaufman. This was a film I was very excited for, it had so many things going for it. All the talent in front and behind the camera and the story just looked fascinating. Did it deliver though, in short answer kinda but there’s more to be said. First of all let me just say how much I respect and admire Charlie Kaufman as a Screenwriter and even director. His work is always super unique, different and they seem to focus on characters that are well realized. I’m thinking of ending things though, feels like a 2020 Charlie Kaufman film monitored by Netflix where he is under restrictions on creativity and can’t fully express this story the way he would have liked. I know that this film is based on a book so that may explain why this story and the outcome of it all is so unfulfilling but it had so much potential to be something better. Let me just give credit where credit is due though, because there’s a lot of positives to I’m thinking of ending things and there’s no denying that. It’s a well done film overall, the way it was shot, the musical theme the film has throughout its runtime is pleasant and joyous, the acting from everyone is excellent but the standout for me was Toni Collette. She was always an actress of such range, where she is able to go with the characters she plays, her commitment and her performance here just gave me more respect for her. I’m thinking of ending things is a character driven film that prioritizes conversations that characters have with each other. It has a lot of dialogue, and there aren’t many locations that are explored. Most of the settings are in locations that are seen often and we’re supposed to get comfortable spending time in them. Since the film has so much dialogue it’s important for the screenplay to be strong. The screenplay is intriguing at times and I liked the tone of it all but I felt like what the film was trying to convey it didn’t do a good job of conveying. The first two acts of the film are great, I liked the setup, where the story was potentially going and how the film wasn’t afraid of not explaining itself. Let’s talk about that, how the film doesn’t explain itself. From the get go a lot of how this story unfolds is odd, weird, creepy and you have a lot of questions. That’s how we the audience relate to the protagonist because we're experiencing the same things and have the same questions as she does. So there is some sense and search to find out what is going on but I felt like all that went to waste in the clumsy third act. The third act didn’t wrap things up at all, but instead got more confusing, weird and I checked out. I’m thinking of ending things is a film with a lot of depth, hidden meanings and there’s so much more under the surface. I give it praise for not trying to go the straightforward route but with a third act that doesn’t care about giving the answers and explaining itself the outcome of it all made me ask what was the purpose of all that just happened.

I first heard about this movie a few weeks ago when I saw the trailer and was intrigued by it! It looked like it had the potential to be something really good if done right. So I was really excited for it to come out today and thought it could be the right way to end the summer movie season. I watched the movie this morning and I got to say it surprised me. Even though I was looking forward to it I was still a little hesitant and tried not to keep my hopes too high. Cause it’s a Netflix movie after all, so it could be really good or flat out bad. It didn’t feel like a traditional Netflix movie though in this genre but instead something mature and surprisingly sweet. I really liked the messages this movie had and the character arc the lead goes through. You feel for her and ultimately want the best. The movie is actually really emotional, more than I thought it would be but it worked. The characters were great and likable, the music was soulful and even beautiful at times, it had a little bit of humor that was effective and overall I felt as though this was a rare movie that unfortunately we don’t get enough of. All Together now succeeded at what it was aiming for and the outcome of it all was delightful, emotionally impacting, and a great time!
