If you are familiar with Shakespearean comedies, you'll know it's always the same - one or two couples, a lame villain, a bad plan, and a happy ending usually has a wedding. You have all of those here. So, same boring story tweaked by the bard's wit. But, if you are new to his comedies, both the film and the play will be a delight. The whole movie is in Black and White. If you are not comfortable with it, you have been warned. If that's not an issue, then there's nothing to complain about. This is an excellent adaptation from JossWhedon(Avengers) worth the watch

An exiled Duke accompanied by his daughter lives on an island. But, the Duke - Prospero is not just a simple man, but a magician(Not the card trick kind but one who can control tempests). He uses his magic to get back his rightful dukedom. I mentioned Prospero as a 'he' right? But, in this movie (s)he is 'Prospera' - a female. Apart from this genderswap, I didn't find anything deficient in this movie. Don't get me wrong. Genderswap is fine. After all, this is an adaptation. The reason I am mentioning is I see many critics attack this movie saying this is not as good as the director's(Julie Taymor) last Shakespeare adaptation "Titus Andronicus"(We have already had this on our list). To me, this is a fine adaptation. The visuals were a treat to the eyes. The music was good. Can't complain about acting in any good Shakespeare adaptation. I would say comparing two adaptations of different plays is foolish. If you do so, you are basically comparing the source material and not the adaptation. If Titus was better, it's because Titus Andronicus has a better story than The Tempest. I don't see why the director should be held accountable. If you still wanna complain, go dig the Bard's grave.
