In the beginning scenes , the portrayal of Italy , after World War II , where peoples are fighting for their simple livelihood , where office, big buildings were all over but there are huge number of peoples for whom those are only , a nice view of some far far away country , that not seems to be their own. The main actor who have a wife , one little boy and a very new born baby are struggling to find a job after returning from the War, want to have some money to have his bicycle back from the store as it is required for his job of spreading cinema poster all over the city where ,poster of American film is being shown intentionally to show where Italy is now , that time. That was a nice jump cut in that film, in one shot , his wife take the clothes to wash and in the next shot she with a close shot depositing the clothes to have the money and when the lender took the cloth and went to put it in the rack we find a follow up shot and then tilting up the camera to show that the man was climbing several steps to keep that and we see hundreds of clothes, bed sheets where there , that clearly depicts that a big number of peoples are doing it just to maintain their living. This is a great example of how you can use visual language to tell something that audience of any country or place or language can understand and that is the greatest strength of film media. To keep the bed sheets to the top of the rack , the trader used ladder and the actress was trying to locate where her bed sheets are being kept but it was too far and too high that it almost lost in crowd. Hopelessness is a kind of thing that shown in the film, every time when they try to do something as a cure , a new problem arises to destroy the hope . This reality need to bring to the greater and well being audience of Italy , that purpose fully served through this film. Even when they were eating , the father and the boy in a restaurant , continuously the shots of a wealthy family was shown and the boys were trying to show it to each other ; it was a good depiction of the inequality that was prevailed in the society ,powerfully. Like, some struggling to earn his day to day living , and some living thousand days in a day. This visual story telling is a prime classic of Italian newrealism by Sica , no matter how many times you watch it, every time new statement you will get.
