I've never been more disappointed in a book to film adaptation in my life! Scratch that, I've never been so let down by film full stop. I appreciate that they'd have to make some changes but to take out the whole soul of the books?! I barely recognised it as an Artemis Fowl adaptation. I was so excited to be finally seeing some of my favourite childhood characters on the screen and I wish I'd never bothered. The beauty of the books is the work that goes into each and every character. Artemis the criminal child genius who couldn't help but admire. Holly Short the tough and rebellious hero. Butler, a massively imposing, badass and deep character. Foaly, the wisecracking tech wizard centaur. Mulch, the dwarf thief who ends up being one of the biggest heroes of all. Root, one of my personal favourite characters, the tough talking and ever so angry commander with a heart. This has all be diluted and ruined in this adaptation. By far I was most dissatisfied with the portrayal of Butler. The troll fight scene. One of the most iconic in the books. Ruined. Butler, an imposing physical specimen, ruined. He was nothing of the sort. I could go on and on about all of the disappointments this film had but I don't want to think about it much longer. Even a high star cast couldn't help. Awful. Abysmal. Confusing. Lazy. Don't watch.
