It is a memoir from Stein's perspective on her feelings towards when France first fell to Germany in WWII and how, through childhood memories, we get a glimpse into what it might've been like for Stein or someone who was in France, either French themselves or not, and how it intertwines commentary of her childhood memories with the things going on around Stein when she was a young girl living in France.
