I personally consider this movie a masterpiece, it is not afraid to show darker tones and themes like other Disney movies. At the beginning of the movie the movie introduces you to Quasimodo and Claude Frollo, and asks the question “Who is the monster and who is the man?” At first you would say Quasimodo is the monster because of his ‘monster-like’ appearance, but at the end of the movie you can learn that it referred to Frollo as the monster because of his monstrous acts against the Gypsies, the people of France, and even Notre Dame herself. The movie also introduces Esmérelda, a Gyspie girl. She is not good within stone walls similarly to her people, she meets Quasimodo who has been content with staying in some for his entire life. She teaches him to leave Notre Dame and do the right thing, not the easy one. I also feel like the songs in this movie fit into the plot and story so perfectly, unlike other Disney songs sometimes can do. I do not have any nostalgic tie to this movie, I didn’t grow up watching it and I didn’t read the book from the 1800s, I’m just an average movie watcher who is now in love with this absolutely underrated gem of a film. I absolutely recommend watching this movie if you have not already.
