THE most epic TV series of all time! There is a reason GoT has the most Emmy awards of any TV show ever created. HBO has wisely spared no expense in order to bring a cinematic experience to the TV screen - every episode is like watching a mini-movie, with all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a cinema-grade movie, and MORE. They have taken George R.R. Martin's story of medieval fantasy and made it a reality for the viewer - something never done before with this genre. It's like Lord of the Rings, The 300, Clash of the Titans, Conan the Barbarian, and any other epic-type of film in this genre family all rolled into one. If you liked even one of those films, you're going to love Game of Thrones. (You'll see actors from some of those films, too - Sean Bean, Lena Heady, Liam Cunningham - to name a few.)
If you're a late starter (the season 8 premier - the final season - begins on 4/14/2019), I would recommend going on YouTube and looking up the "Game of Thrones Beginner's Guide", which will take you roughly through to the end of season 5, then binge-watch seasons 6 & 7 to get caught up. You'll miss a lot doing that but, at least you'll have some idea of what is going on when the final season starts. I would, however, recommend that you go back and watch the series from the beginning when you're able to, because you do miss so many nuances of the story if you don't do that. I've watched the series at least a dozen times and, I'm still catching things I didn't notice before - it's that good and that complex.
You don't want to miss this, because it is reported that the most epic battle ever committed to film (bigger and longer than "Helms Deep") will occur on Game of Thrones during the season 8 third episode. It will be a history-making battle that will be talked about the world over for many years to come. Don't be left out of the conversation!
As someone who started watching this series from day one, I cannot recommend it highly enough! I have watched some of the seasons over 20 times, and I NEVER get sick of it.
