This is a magnificent story of the hardships of life in China through Mao's cultural revolution and the excesses of political victimisation causing so much unnecessary misery to so many innocent families. Having first visited China in 1987 and working there for 3 years from 1989, this novel brought back many memories of the best and worst of China even post the Mao era. It really is superbly written.
