I fully expected this movie to be a disaster. 'The New Mutants' has never been an A-tier comic book, and this movie was the last to come out of the X-Men after the Disney-Fox merger. That combined with the 2 years delay and several re-shootings, made me think this movie would be a low budget flop. I am happy I was wrong.
The New Mutants is a solid 8/10 movie. It's a good movie. It has well fleshed-out characters, high-quality CGI and a satisfying overall story.
While it is described as a horror movie, I would say it's more of a movie with horror elements. Instead it focuses more on it's characters, and that's it's greatest strength. The 5 main characters have unique and distinct personalities, and it's a treat to see them interacting with each other.
The unexpected part about this movie for me, was how good the CGI is. Illyana's powers are done beyond perfectly. This is how I would expect it to be done in a movie with twice it's budget. The CGI is done perfectly everywhere else too; in Dani's nightmare bear, The smiling faces, Roberto's fire, that Kentucky dude's speed and Rahne's wolf form(which reminds me of Shakespeare for some reason).
If things had turned out differently, I would have liked to see where these characters went from here. There is a lot of potential for new stories in them. Hell, I would watch a sequel on Illyana alone. Good movie overall.
