Spoilers ahead: If you’re seeking a run-of-the-mill, generic, happy go lucky Christmas movie… then this is NOT the picture for you.
Silent Night is an extraordinarily somber doomsday story that addresses the subjects of climate change, exploitative capitalism, imperialism, racism, and the politically backwards centrist AND conservative ideologies that led to the destruction of the planet.
Extremely well acted by everybody in the cast, a very original and interesting story. It’s really grim while also being quite funny.
There are some flaws, such as the children being a little too precocious as they engage in adult, overly wokey monologues about the state of the planet and human rights (these are important talking points … but they could have been written or addressed differently for the film because not everyone needs to have every tiny thing explained all the time for context). Thus, more subjectivity and implications should have been used over being so verbally obvious. Other than that minor critique I loved this film a lot.
The film did make me feel Christmasy while being super morose and dark. It’s the anti-Hallmark Christmas film. An entertaining and creative take on the global climate crises, human equality and equity, wealth and social justice without being preachy. I loved it. And I do recommend this film. 4.5 out of 5. 🎅🏼
