What was to be considered a Biopic of one of America’s most horrific serial killers, ends in a way that leaves the audience in questioning. Why would the director choose to lighten the atrocities committed by Ted Bundy? Yes, there was the “back and forth” notions between the prosecutors and Bundy. The only thing that condemns his character, etched in the form of evidence followed by charismatic rebuttals. Disappointing.
As for the acting in the film, Efron, Collins and Scodelario all do an amazing job with deliverance and make do with their scripts. Efron absolutely stole the show with his charm and ability, something that alone, people should be compelled to watch. Seeing this side of his skills was refreshing, against his usual round-up.
I think where this all ends up falling flat is the storytelling. As aforementioned, Ted Bundy is a murderer. I fully understand taking the alternative route on displaying his more charming side to the audience (one that the public knew all too well during the time) in efforts to convey what experiencing the trials were like. I only wish they were able to fit more of the victims families and victims themselves into the plot in order to show both sides of the coin. A movie working with material such as this, should be cognizant of the line between glamorization and actuality.
