So many moments could be so great, but just miss the target. The writing purely relies on you already being invested because of the franchise, and offers barely a second to garner any sort of attachment from the audience. On top of all this, they went with the incredibly overused movie trope of "bad thoughts and weird things only come from space." While this was still sourced from
the comics and original story, it seemed as if it were used simply as a mandatory tool and excuse for Jean's "character developement." There was maybe only one solid cumulative minute to begin to sympathize or understand the internal struggle of Jean Grey and the Phoenix Force, in relation to Xavier's mind-meddling.
Story aside, the effects and physical forces at play seemed off-beat and to really fall flat. There are un-countable moments where the power of the Phoenix Force seems comparable to a pea-shooter. The particle effects were stunning, but they were also stunning in the same way in the original X-3. There didn't seem to be a sense of uncontrollable power at all.
Personally, I'm going to pretend I never saw this.
