Michelangelo Antonioni 'La Notte' is a film about architecture and how it affects life in our outer and inner worlds. It draws a connection between the rigid walls of building frames, doors, and windows, and the soft skeleton and skin of our bodies. All the buildings we see here are all new highrise buildings that were built after the war on the traditionally flat landscape of Milan.
Marcello Mastroianni had a hard time deciding whether or not to do the movie because Antonioni kept telling his actors, don't react, don't show your emotions and Mastroianni said (Giovanni) it was a difficult role to play and Jeanne Moreau (Lidia) said it was the same for her. Both actors fulfilled the director's wishes very well. Monica Vitti as Valentina does a superb job as well.
