I love the singer Selena but being of Asian descent, I didn't discover her until after she passed away. After hearing "Dreaming of You," her CD was one of the very first ones that I bought with my own money. Then, I saw the movie and I learned about her tragic end.
I've been faithfully listening to her songs since then. I also like to watch videos and interviews of her on YouTube so even though I haven't seen her alive, I have a clear picture of her in my head.
I was so excited to watch this series. I had high hopes for it because her real family was involved on the making of it. However, I must say that I didn't like it and there are several reasons why.
First, the writing was not very good, in my opinion. The pace is so slow that it tends to be boring. It didn't seem like there was a thought in creating a good script. The whole first episode was through Selena's father's POV. While that might be a choice, I would have appreciated to see the story through Selena's POV.
Second, I can't get past the fact that they cast a stick-thin actress to play Selena. Selena was known for her perfect curves and her slightly rounded face. This actress doesn't even slightly resemble her. The actress they hired might be part-Mexican but she's also part Italian. They could have chosen someone who more closely resembled Selena's body and face shape. I wasn't fully able to believe that I was watching Selena. I mean, Jennifer Lopez is not the best actress in the World but she was much more believable for me in the movie.
Third, the wigs and makeup were also all wrong. I don't know what the budget was for this series but they should have been able to hire proper professionals. The frizzy wigs were terrible. They never nailed Selena's signature make-up either.
I gave up on this show after a couple of episodes. I just took out my old DVD and rewatched the movie.
