I didn't even know this show existed until my mother texted me 10 minutes before the premier to say I "might like it". So I gave it a shot, and I'm so glad I did! I don't usually like musicals, but the musical aspect was fun, and by using pop songs they ensured that I knew all the words to sing along -- which made it even more enjoyable. The storytelling is great, with the emotional pacing mostly perfect (Mo's quick acceptance of superpowers was a bit jarringly unbelievable, but her willingness to keep admitting, "you might just be crazy, but I'll play along" lessened that.) The bits with her father and Simon's father had me tearing up.
Also, as a software developer myself, I found myself relating to Zoey at work so much. I've been on teams that find showstopping bugs days before launch, and everyone panics and works overtime to fix them. I've been offered a promotion to management on those teams (which I turned down, because I'm more like Max and don't care for management). And after spending 5 days bug-hunting only to find out the bug is caused by a network failure masked by hardcoded default values? Well, I've never had that exact experience, but I've had plenty like it and I felt their pain :D
Overall, Zoey is not my favorite new show, but it's definitely on my list of shows that I'll be watching when it's officially airing.
