This heartwarming film is a good try, but if you have read the book, I don't think you would want to watch the film. I did not like Stephen's interpretation of the book. It is very shallow and weak, and I felt a lot of sections in the book could have been added into the film. Some parts, like the hearing aids, the family's discussion of whether August should go to school or not should have been expanded or added on. This were very important parts which would contribute to the culmination of the story. I also did not appreciate how Stephen made Miranda's section feel very rushed and short. Especially after the play, I expected to see a reunion between Miranda and the family, but the film just jumps straight into her being at their house. That is very messed up. Also, even though August's sister, Via, did feel left out, especially when the movie goes on, as she felt like the attention was all on August, but the film was very weak at portraying her grit and strength. I expected to see how she overcame it, not just jealous of her own brother. Another big disappointment was how the presence of Justin throughout the film. For example, Justin actually acquainted with Jack in the book, and he even stood up for Jack when they met Julian outside of school. Justin acted tough in front of them and the effect was there, Julian and his gang were afraid. But that was obviously missing in the film. Justin and Via's relationship also felt very rushed and brief, and it did not portray a very intimate relationship which was what it eventually became. Not only that, we did not even see an ongoing battle between Julian and Jack. If you have read the book, you would know how many scenes were left out. This prolonged discord between Jack and Julian was extremely important as it was the climax of the story, but in the show, this was so rushed it did not even feel like anything. In the movie, after short scenes of their disagreement, Jack just suddenly punched Julian. Where's the build up? Stephen could have added more scenes to further complement the film, but he missed the opportunities. Overall very disappointing
