I first read this book when an impressionable teenager, given a copy by someone who knew him. It is totally stunning! What a brave man/lunatic. What pleases me is, that this special man came through it all and lived a happy life, dying peacefully in his beloved Scotland.

Heart wrenching and beautiful at the same time. A story of lost love and growing up combined. His descriptions of the landscape is so evocative of my feelings in my youth although in a quite different part of the country.
