For those who don't know, Urban Myths is a British comedic anthology series featuring episodes about the most iconic/infamous actors, authors, musicians, sport stars, and even members of the British royal family in weird and out of place situations, meet ups, or events. The episodes range from being based off true stories to sort of true stories and re-imagines them with humor and drama that go pretty well together. All of the episodes released so far show: Bob Dylan traveling to England to visit Dave Stewart, but accidentally showing up at the wrong house where a different Dave lives, Samuel Beckett forming a friendship with a 12 to 13 year old Andre the Giant after being put in charge of driving him to school. An 18 year old Adolf Hitler attempting (and failing) to become a famous artist and get into an art academy with the help of August Kubizek, Cary Grant and Timothy Leary on LSD for 12 hours during the production of North by Northwest, Muhammad Ali saving a young man from jumping off a building, Marilyn Monroe trying to say a single movie line during the production of Some Like It Hot, which took almost 50 tries before she got it right, causing frustration and side bets for the movie crew, Bob Geldof trying to control the Live Aid concerts, and facing numerous problems which include scheduling issues, a fallout with Midge Ure, and most of the performing musicians being difficult to work with, Johnny Cash reflecting on an incident where he almost got killed by an ostrich which put him into a drug addiction, making him believe that the same ostrich is still after him, Salvador Dali inviting Alice Cooper to help him with a holographic art project, Marc Bolan and David Bowie meeting each other as teenagers while painting an office for their manager, Dorothy L Sayers and Arthur Conan Doyle taking part in finding Agatha Christie, who was reported missing for 11 days in 1926, A British man offering Public Enemy a ride to a concert after their tour bus leaves them behind, The moments before, during and after the Sex Pistols appeared on the Bill Grundy show, Freddie Mercury and Kenny Everett inviting Princess Diana to a drag tavern, where Diana meets a drag artist suffering from AIDS, Andy Warhol signing up as a celebrity judge for cheer-leading auditions hosted by Donald Trump just so he can ask about some paintings that Donald never paid for, Hans Christian Andersen staying with Charles Dickens and his family for 5 weeks, Joan Collins fighting against a book publishing company in court, A desperate burglar with his life on the line robbing Grace Jones and Jean-Paul Goude, The relationship between Madonna and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Paul McCartney learning the tune of "Yesterday" in a dream and trying to find out if anyone came up with it before him, and finally, Princess Margaret dating Mick Jagger, despite Queen Elizabeth's protests.
While a bit skeptical at first, i really enjoyed this show the more i watched and it soon became one of my favorite British TV shows. i love the concept, the surprisingly good casting choices of mostly British actors and actresses which range from Eddie Marsan and Ben Chaplin, to Gemma Arterton and Abdul Salis, the writing, the music, the celebrity references, Gemma Arterton (Marilyn Monroe) and Noel Clarke (Muhammad Ali) doing some of the best American accents you will hear, and i even like the ending messages of most of the episodes. My only negative of this show is that i don't find myself laughing too much even though it's a comedy, but everything i mentioned earlier more than makes up for it. If you live in North America like i do, you might have a hard time finding Urban Myths, but if you do, definitely give it a watch when possible.
My rating: 8.5/10 (sorry if my review is too long)
