I am not a critic and will not attempt to post a quasi- critique with the usual fancy and flowery language etc. This is just my humble personal opinion as a viewer.
Overall, I found this to be a watchable mini-series with a gripping yet macabre and dark storyline. The filming, alas, was also a bit too dark at times, which, whilst understandable for the period, did not make for easy viewing.
The acting overall was believable, although some attempts at the Hull (or even Yorkshire) accent were left wanting at times - Stephen Graham slipped into his native scouse on more than one occasion and Tom Courtney, the only native Hullensian in the cast, showed he has spent a long time away from the city of his birth, despite a strong performance. Jack O'Connell was solid throughout and did not fall into the trap of attempting some sort of Irish/English brogue befitting his character and instead stayed close to his roots. By far, the standout performance came from Colin Farrell as the malevolent Drax. Comparisons, I know, have been made to The Terror. But for me, the only performance that came close to Richard Harrisesque came from Farrell rather than his own son. This was probably Farrell's finest performance for quite some time and bodes well for his career as he matures.
