When you sick of marvel's very standard safe format and DC's lack of hitting the mark with the exception of Joker, and some great casting, then the Umbrella Academy is what your looking for. I think what works for it best is the fact you may know people in your own life that are like the characters. Klaus the openly gay guy that speaks with the dead, is not only well written, well acted, but the story telling in film was fantastic. Normally i don't like the gay characters in movies, when it feels tossed in. This is not the case here. Somebody truly loves this character and it shows. While there are some small things i did not like they are to small to even write on. I'll just say 4.7 is about right. If you liked "I kill giants" and "Joker" then this is a pleasant surprise. If i was to put Avengers 1 and 2 and the 2 endgame movie together and compare them to The Umbrella Academy's 10 shows, i would be hard pressed to pick a winner. But i am spent on the Marvel Format, So Umbrella Academy Wins.
