Go into this knowing as little as possible. Similar to The Village, if you come into this hoping to have the bejeezus scared out of you, you will be disappointed. It has scary moments, but this is more of an existential miniseries. Even without the scares I love, I much preferred this to Bly Manor which had more scary moments but lacked the rules, plot speed, and sequential logic that are paramount to any good screenplay in the suspense / magic / horror realm.
PROs:
- Great acting, Hamish Linklater (Legion!) & Zach Guilford (FNL!) really make you feel for these characters. Samantha Sloyan does an amazing job as well, but her character wasn't nearly as well rounded or charismatic because she wasn't supposed to be
- Serious existential questions
- Somewhat unpredictable
- AMAZING MUSIC. Just perfect for the series.
- Characters' actions are mostly consistent with their characters' wants/needs/lives.
- Episode 5 😳😳😳
CONs:
- 'FlanaGabs': a word I just made up for the hallmark Flanagan monologues; yeah, one is OK sometimes e.g. Nelly in last ep of tHoHH, but so so many. Still, so much more interesting than Bly Manor's never-ending FlanaGabs
- young actors caked down with prosthetics to look old. it's for a reason, blah blah blah, but still annoying.
- Episode 5 ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
