The film is very good for a first time director, and the acting is spot on, but we seem to overly praise black films since the #OscarsSoWhite moment that we had several years ago. For example Ma Rainey's Black Bottom was terrible, yet it's become an inconvenient truth to say that you didn't like a black film. There is nothing about the script or the direction that makes it anything special.
