I don’t spend a lot of my time on Netflix, so it takes a truly intoxicating show like Young Royals to keep me invested, but I could not stop watching this show. It not only gives a unique and necessary telling of the LGBTQ+ youth experience, but this beautiful story provides important representation without perpetuating the harmful stereotypes and tropes of a lot of other LGBTQ+ media. Outside LGBTQ+ representation, Young Royals does an outstanding job of conveying teenagers’ lives in its representation of mental health as well as the autism community. Where a lot of media shies away, Young Royals consistently provides a real and non-harmful depiction of aspects of so many teenager’s lives, making it ever more easy to love and resonate with. It is clear that every person who worked on Young Royals put their heart and soul into this project. The cast deserve so much credit for how they made each scene of intimacy, betrayal, or joy burst to life. Beyond the acting, the crew put so much care into each detail of the show; from the music choice to the shortest of shots, the cast and the crew’s sheer talent at what they do is what really makes the show a stunner. I dislike rewatching shows, but this one has me coming back again and again to feel the magic all over. It carries a special place in mine and so many other’s hearts, and will carry a special place in the hearts of so many to come. I strongly recommend it to anyone looking for a true story of love that will have you smiling, crying, and fuming all at the same time. :)
