The unique direction that the show aimed at deserves lots of praise. A cowboy ranch looking at the midwest part of the country with conservative ideals and blunt outspoken characters is great for people to be drawn to. It was smart to pick a pro football team, (the Broncos,) instead of a college team, because of the way some have been raised, would cause some conflict gathering as many fans ha. I think the show made a big mistake taking Rooster out of the show! I understand that Netflix decided to not back an actor who is a main part of the show from allegations, but also they did an awful job terminating the character. I don't think they understood the significance of that character to the show.
Although Ashton Kutcher's intentions are genuine and he has put quite a bit of effort into the show, his character is not a draw to young males in their target market. If they were really putting effort into their target market of a young conservative male in the midwest, (and across the country wherever a young man believes he is a cowboy or has old school beliefs small or big city) then they wouldn't have the main character be such a whiny, pretty boy blaming the world for his problems type of character. A young man wants to see a badass, tough, rugged blunt and speaks his mind type of character for this kind of show. The same target viewer probably also wants to see a class act and honest type of guy on the screen. Rooster in the show was the tough and rugged and didn't care what anyone thought about, stood by his family and the closest to what the target market has wanted to see. The main character Colt, whines constantly and talks about his looks and hair products. Rooster was the young male rancher model for the show, and Sam Elliot was a model of the older generation.
I have been watching the show regularly the past few weeks, flying through them. I have stopped at season 6 episode 9, and I can't take it anymore. Colt is disrespectful to his father. His father may be a grump, but I would never get away with talking that way to my father or any of my uncles. Tough loved is preached in the show, but I think the characters and setting needs improvement. Not once have I seen any one of them go out country dancing. Teach a man how to treat a woman, or how to talk to elders. They try to put the show in a perspective that this is the real up to date type of family, but I don't think that is true. There are just some things you don't say to your family and expect to have coffee with them the next day and laugh about it.
There are many parts to the show that leaves out a lot about ranching as well. They have a heard of cattle, and they don't rope any steers??? They don't grow any corn or apple trees on their land, or have any other animals? They don't talk about the importance of maintaining the land. Sam Elliot is awesome in the show and brings back a John Wayne or Clint Eastwood feel to a good ole tough guy country boy. His character is certainly worth watching. I give it a 3/5 stars.
