While I enjoyed The Fall of the House of Usher, Mike Flanagan’s past successes are simply hard acts to follow. Haunting of Hill House, for example, is probably one of the best in the genre that I’ve seen on television, and I loved Midnight Mass from start to finish. The Fall of the House of Usher is good but a little too loose an adaptation of Poe’s work.
My biggest issue is there seemed to be too many high-profile current affairs woven into the plot that at times made the series appear more like a commentary than entertainment. The characters also seemed too stereotypical/exaggerated and reminiscent of the series “Succession”. I would have also loved more of a Gothic tone/setting in memory Mr. Poe.
In any case, Flanagan’s series have become our family’s kick-off of autumn and the Halloween season, and we remain diehard fans!
