IS DEATH NATURAL? WHY DO YOU FIGHT TO LIVE? WHAT IF YOU COULD FIGHT DEATH? WOULD YOU DO IT? WHAT IF THE COST WAS THE LIFE OF OTHERS? WOULD YOU SACRIFICE A FEW FOR THE MANY???
I watched the darkest crystal as a child and was sceptical but this show exceeded my expectations and more...
The visuals are spectacular and other worldly but the characters are the true gifts of this show...
The villians...the skesis are magnificant, magestic, terrifying, horrid and genuinely disturbing to look at, to listen to, the same creatures that gave me nightmares as a kid reimagined perfectly...I love them!!
In brilliant contrast..the Gelfling...pure, kind, cultured and genuinley pretty gaze upon...thrown into a world of pain, choices, consequences and utter despair at times....
Every single character is consistent, valuable, has purpose and their own share of screen time. Characters, initially in the background (such as Seladon), are carefully and beautifully placed in the spotlight for shining, decisive plot twists. The show gives the watcher brilliant and spectacular visuals, combined with a turmultuos moral dilemma about death and acceptance. It had been long since i have been so gripped by a show....I watched the entire thing within two days and survived of two minute noodles and childlike wonder...
I wanted to know everything about the gelfling world, so much so that i forgave the small inconsistencies that arise when you use practical effects and puppets to tell a story. But you know what? Practical effects...with all their limitations will always and forever be more terrifying and compelling to me than any amount of overloaded cgi (of which the directors use quite tastefully for landscapes and the wriggling tongues of the Skeksis)
Thankyou you beautiful directors...for bringing this masterpiece to light. The child in me jumps for joy!!!
