I met William Ping at the Whistler Writer’s festival and loved his reading from the book. This is a very poignant story about the first Chinese immigrants to St John’s Newfoundland, including his grandfather, and how they were able to survive and thrive despite horrendous working conditions and endless racism. The author makes St. John’s of the 1930s and 1940s come vividly to life and spices the tale with humour and the simple joys they were able to find with one another.
