I am one of the uncommon male readers of this series and very much enjoyed the original four books. I read the leaked pdf of this book all those years ago, and like everyone else, eagerly anticipated the arrival of Midnight Sun in its entirety. It is unfortunate that there is really no getting around giving this book the rating of one star out of five.
What is very noticeable to me right off the bat as a male reader is that Meyer does not effectively write from a male perspective, and it severely affects how the readers perceive Edward, as he talks and thinks like Bella throughout the whole book. In the editing stage, it would have done much good to have her husband or sons honestly weigh in and fine-tune the inner dialogue choices for Edward. Having said that, it is clear why Twilight under Bella’s perspective worked incredibly well, and that is because Meyer could portray a female teenager with complete realism, knowing all the ups, downs, desires and thoughts of living through being a teenaged girl.
In addition to the above criticism, Edward has been around for over a century and the way he is presented to us in his own words and thoughts does not reflect the wisdom and experience one would expect someone of that age to have. For over 600 pages, his character is reduced to complaining and not having the mental fortitude to make a decision in one way or the other. Imagine, if instead of him repeating the same things over and over about how Bella is too good for him etc., (not adding anything of value to the story the readers already know) we got a more in-depth insight on Edward and his family before the events of Twilight.
