Honestly this was much weirder than I expected. While a number of things from the movie are directly mentioned, the main focus is on other exploits that the main characters share both together, and in their individual histories. For a fictional novel, this book has the most true historical references I've ever read. Tarantino has taken his artwork of alternate history into print, and it is a delight to behold.
This mechanic is a great way to make an expanded universe for the characters and it definitely adds to a re-watch of the film, imo.
There are also a number of scenes in the book that are all the more lucid for having seen the film. You can clearly imagine looks on peoples faces, locations, and you can almost hear the dialogue in the actors voices, with their cadence from the film and the chemistry which we have already experienced through the stellar casting - it is very present on the pages.
I did not like the strange way it looped from past to present to future about certain topics, it kind of broke the 4th wall for me. Like, how can the book (from 1969) know it's own future? Obviously this is because the author can reach outside the parameters of the present or past and unfurl whatever future he wants on us, but again, this was a weird and unique dynamic in my opinion. I am divided on how I feel about the 'voice' of this book, but I am very happy to see such a new style emerge.
Much as Quentin has done with the movies, there is a really unique offering here on many levels. I do not believe that this will be his masterpiece of print if he carries on, and he needs to get a little better handle on the time-travelling voice issue imo, but then here I am reviewing a piece of writing by a guy who has won the highest awards in cinema - FOR HIS WRITING, so maybe I'm full of it, but it's how I felt.
Enjoyable but a little cumbersome in form because of how new this whole concept of such a work is now. This isn't a 'novelization' of the movie, which I really appreciate. It's like the whole book is made of the sort of nuggets you would normally read a novelization for, but the main movie is just the little nugs and the majority of the book is fantasy-league inside baseball.
Very excited to see what he does next in this medium. I would be totally cool with him stopping making movies and digging into other subjects in this way as he hones his skills.
Overall 7.51/10
