The word I am going to describe this movie with is "value".. I don't usually write reviews, but I want to be part of this as this could be a benchmark for tamil cinema and its value. The word Thangalaan means the son of gold! So gold is a valuable element found in earth. A thing can have value no matter whatever it is, based on circumstances it can change. The thing I took from the movie is not a piece of gold's value, but the piece of cloth's value that is beautifully portrayed in this film, how it can denote power and how it can change a lifestyle. The value of the same thing is different to each of them including gold, cloth, education, power, food and more importantly freedom. Pa Ranjith doesn't just focus on the oppression from the so called "upper caste" or even the British, he focuses on how as a people have lost the land, their freedom, themselves when they forget the value of it. It is to cultivate, remembered and celebrated our rights on property. When Malavika's character is shown as the antagonist, and it takes turn as something else the value changes. That's the power of perspective. The true value/color of the British officer Clement is seen when he finds the gold which happens to be fake. The value of upper class when they get the chance to loot. Everything is wonderfully said if you follow carefully with the story. Ranjith has proved himself in this. Vikram, Malavika, Pasupathi, Parvathi Thiruvothu, Hari Krishna and all the cast members have lived and not acted as the role per se. GV has constructed the music to match the visual spectacle that we witness. Each and every frame has a value. I appreciate each and everyone in the crew to take time and achieve this. The rawness, the aesthetics, the nature, everything was so so good. Thangalaan a solid 9/10
