It's 2019. This drama was shown in the Philippines in 2014 but I got wound about it only this time. No regrets, though. Just glad that I got to watch it, over and over and over again.
First off, the directing is superb. How can one elicit such grand acting from all those actors, that is mind blowing. From Episode 1 to Episode 51, there is consistency. And this made the storytelling cohesive.
The cinematography was impressive. I know that some scenes were shot with green screen but somehow you manage to give us, viewers that sense of grandeur when you have shots of the palace or the fields, etc. The framing and angle of the camera is very dramatic.
The writer or writers made sure that all conflicts are solved. Also, they took the time to develop each character so well. Each one had her or his own moment.
The supporting actors/actresses gave a stellar performance. Empress Dowager with her fine looks and intense eyes was captivating. Yeonchul was a convincing character. I would want to kill him too.
Joo JinMo suited Wang Yoo's role like a glove. His rugged looks, his tanned color even his voice is very manly. He exudes so much manliness, it jumps out of the screen. He delivered very heartfelt acting, too.
Ji ChangWook as the immature Emperor was adorable. I would like to give him a pat on the back or a slap on his backside. His delivery of anger, love, hatred, fear was awesome. He has a captivating smile and it endears him. He is one actor who poured his all into this role.
Han JiWoon was Hwang Jini and now Empress Ki. She made me cry buckets when she was Hwang Jini. In Empress Ki, she made me proud being a strong woman. She transformed many times in this drama. From a thug, to a maid, to a court lady, back to being a warrior and a lover, then as a consort, eventually an Empress. Her many roles demanded of her and she never failed to deliver.
Producers, a really good job!
This is one drama that I will remember for a long time.
