The take was fresh in the sense of the topic of his sexuality wasn't foreboding over the entire movie. It still comes off as very predictable in spots i.e. the overly macho jock who can't accept his sexuality (whatever it may be.) Had it focused more on Frankie and his friends and less on the Mello drama of it all, this could've been 5 stars. The movie is smart and really funny in parts, which I wasn't expecting.
With all that said, I am a sucker for these coming of age films. It does capture, perfectly, the feeling of fear, the unknown and ultimately, acceptance that comes from being a gay adolescent. And dude... That soundtrack though--got me right in the feels.
