[Spoilers Ahead!!!]
So after officially playing this game to its entirety and delving through the pain and at times strange storytelling, I can say that this is at best a delve into what it means to be a different individual as the takeaway.
Spoiler territory now! The ending is vague and frustrating to me personally as I was confused. The final confrontation of Ellie and Abby was draining, Ellie freed her and then fought her. She has a flashback to how Joel died and then letโs Abby go. I was angry at first, but the anger turned to understanding very quickly. Joel is not Ellie and Ellie is not Joel. Joel sacrifices the entirety of the human race to save Ellie at the end of the original. Ellie is not a brutal individual, she hurt Abby and killed everyone she knew, but I believe at the end she was reminded exactly of what Joel did for her as well as his death. Abby was gone, she moved forward and Ellie was stuck with the pain, Ellie let go of that pain in those final moments and became a ghost like Abby. Abby has given this kid a shot and Ellie was not going to take it away from Lev. Though it was infuriating to watch it occur I believe Ellie was reminded of the chance Joel gave her originally in that moment with Abby and Lev.
This game was confusing and fun and it was not the story I expected. I believe the ending reflects life and how sometimes we have to just move forward through the pain. Although, in my opinion, Abby should have died, itโs what I would have done. Thatโs my piece.
Naughty Dog thanks for creating a cool game, might want to work on that vague ending for future installments if any are planned. Also, for those trashing on the game, I get it but unless you played the actual game, kindly shut up.
