I read this book in 2 days. I agree, the Great Depression was an awful time, and you have to be in the right frame of mind to pick up a giant book that takes place in such a desperate time period. I couldn’t put it down. If I had read this during 2020, it may have received a different reception. Elsa, along with many characters, is flawed. That’s what makes it such an interesting read. I can’t relate to her unwillingness to expect or demand better, but on the topic of motherhood, I can relate to her. I would move mountains to save my child. This book is about hope, and hope is exactly what we need in 2021.
