Lena states the different species cannot crossbreed. I know Portland is not a real scientist but even she should know that closely-linked species very commonly crossbreed. Shark-alligator-bear: no. But hybridization is quite common. Example: dog + coyote
As for the film, it was pretty but the narrative was muddled.
