I was really looking forward to this film. Loved The Shining full of strange unsettling terrifying happenings & Jack Nicholson & Shelley Duval were iconic in their roles. But I was so disappointed. Apart from Ewan Mcgregor & the girl playing Abra also Rose the Hat I really did not enjoy it. I found it confusing disjointed too far fetched too unbelievable but what really disgusted & sickened me was the prolonged kidnap torture & murder of the little boy. It was long horrible unbearable to watch & should never have been filmed. I wanted to leave there & then but stuck it to the bitter & far too long coming end. What are the people involved with this film thinking of putting in this vile sick horrible scene so painful to watch. A disgrace. I will never watch this film again. Not a patch on the Shining & maybe should not have been made.

I thought it was completely superb. One of the best films ever. What a fantastic mesmerising breathtaking performance by Joaquin Phoenix. What an actor. I truly believed in him. Such a difficult part but he actually made you root for him even when he was shooting or stabbing people. The scenery was so dark & murky & lowering the peoe so dangerous when rioting Robert De Niro was superb as a creepy dislikeable chat show host in fact all the smaller parts were so good. It had so much to give, I have booked to see it again. Joaquin acted with his whole body & his expressions were so intense you couldn't take your eyes off him. Never have I seen acting like this before in years of movie going.
